HYÈRES, FRANCE-(27-4-2004) Finally on the third day of Hyeres Olympic Week the wind filled in and the competitors had their best day of racing so far. Olympic gold medallist Shirley Robertson and team mates Sarah Ayton and Sarah Webb sailed a good day in the sea breeze conditions to pull out an eleven point lead over the rest of the Yngling fleet.
Scoring an eleventh place in the first race of the day, the British team quickly followed it up with two first places to extend their lead over the fleet. They are currently lying first, in front of Sally Barkow, Carrie Howe and Debbie Capozzi of America.
Robertson commented, “We had a good day today - it was a better breeze but still quite shifty. We didn’t sail that well in the first race and to be honest were lucky to finish eleventh. In the next two races, Sarah [Ayton] was all over the tactics and we did really well, so we are happy.”
In the Laser fleet, Team GBR sailor Paul Goodison enjoyed the conditions and scored his second race win of the week, which he followed up with a second place. This sees him take the lead over the class and the double Olympic medallist Robert Scheidt of Brazil. Fellow Brit Andrew Commander also had a good day, scoring a third and a first to move up to thirteenth place overall and tied on equal points with team mate Mark Howard, who is one place behind.
A further two races were sailed in the 470 men’s and women’s fleets and an eighth and a thirteenth place saw Team GBR sailors Christina Bassadone and Katherine Hopson move up into fourth place overall. Vesna Dekleva and Klara Maucec of Slovenia currently lead the fleet by three points from Ingrid Pettitjean and Nadege Douroux of France.
In the men’s class, Benjamin and Romain Bonnaud of France maintain their lead over the fleet, with Marinho Alvaro and Miguel Nunes of Portugal lying in second place overall. A ninth and a fourteenth saw Team GBR sailors Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield drop down the fleet into seventh place overall although the points are very close with just five points separating third and seventh place. RYA Development squad sailors Nic Asher and Elliot Willis continue to perform well and are currently in twelfth place with team mates Graham Vials and Bevis Field fifteenth.
The battle continues in the 2.4mR class and there have been a few changes at the top after two further races. Allan Smith had a good day, scoring a sixth and a third, to not only close the gap but overtake team mate, and rival for the 2004 Paralympic spot, Helena Lucas. Smith is currently three points ahead of Lucas, with fellow Brit Andrew Millband just three points behind in fifth place. Dutch sailor Thierry Schmitter has moved back into the lead from Damien Seguin of France.
Elsewhere in the other fleets, Laura Baldwin has moved up into fourteenth place in the Europe fleet after scoring a fifth and a seventh and Andrew Simpson is currently lying in seventh place overall in the Finn class.
The event concludes on Friday 30 April, with twelve races scheduled for all the fleets, except the 49er and Mistral classes who are scheduled sixteen.
